Boxing 101

Boxing is a combat sport where two participants, generally of similar weight, fight each other with their fists. It is also a great cardio and lean muscle building workout.

Where to start:

  • Intimidated – Cardio Kickboxing class at any gym
  • Interested – Boxing w/a trainer at a Boxing gym
  • Intense – MMA w/ trainer and a MMA gym

NEVER USE WIEGHTS WHEN TAKING A GROUP FITNESS BOXING TYPE CLASS.

You will hurt your shoulder

Equpiment needed:

Handwraps

Gloves

  • Women: 14oz
  • Men: 16oz
  • Large men: 18oz

Stance

  • Be comfortable
  • Take a step back with foot that correlates to you strong hand(If your right handed take a step back with right foot)
  • Front foot points to where you want to hit
  • Back foot is at a 45 degree angel
  • Lightly squat (think sitting down on a chair)

 Moving in stance

  • Lead with whatever foot is closest to the direction you want to go
  • NEVER CROSS OUR LEGS

 Jab

  • Elbows in
  • Extend arm straight (think rockam sockam robots)
  • Twist wrist
  • Bring back

Equipment you will use while working out

 Heavy bag

  • Works movement and power

 Double bag

What to look for in a boxing trainer

  • IF THE DON’T HAVE YOU WRAP YOUR HANDS WALK AWAY
  • They need to focus on form and technique
  • They need to tell you the breathe
  • Does their personal style of teaching suit you? (Are they a yeller?)

FINAL THOUGHT

Don’t be afraid it’s a great fun workout

(plus when people find out that you box, they will think you’re a BADASS)

Here’s a video of Tyler and his old roommates playing around, this is by no means an instructional video, and the fact that Tyler kicks the crap out of his roommate is incidental. We just thought you might enjoy (There is some questionable language in this video, so…watch out):
